Gilt-Wood Figure of Buddha Muromachi Period
Muromachi Period
Constructed in multiple sections, the serene figure is seated in dhyanasana on a single lotus, wearing monastic garb and with his hands completely covered under the folds. The face is framed by hair caught up in wide bands surmounted by a similarly-banded topknot; both layers of the coif terminate in a spiral of hair at the front. Except for the hair, the figure and lotus are covered with gold lacquer, the majority of which is complete. Height 14 inches (35.5 cm).
