According to Isabelle Rouault, the artist's daughter, the present work was part of a group of pastels and gouaches that the artist executed for a film that was never realized. A Pantin refers to a cemetary outside of Paris.
The present work will be included in the forthcoming third volume of the catalogue raisonne of the artist's paintings.
