Rare Pair of European Subject, Painted Enamel Dishes
First half of the 18th century
Painted with reverse images of a woman and boy in the gardens of a villa. The central scenes are surrounded by a grisaille border of scrolling foliage and a wide cellwork rim for five quatrelobed panels of birds and flowers. The reverse rims are painted with four quatrefoil panels of ochre/green phoenix and chilong against a yellow and green floral ground. Diameter 8 5/8 inches (21.9 cm).
A dish with identical border was sold at Sotheby's, New York, 1-2 June 1993, lot 119
