Hals is thought to have executed two versions of the present composition both now lost. One type, of which this picture is representative, is exemplified by the version in the Earl of Pembroke's Collection, Wilton House, Salisbury. It displays six children crowded around the musician. Another version as seen in the Kimbell Art Museum and the Art Institute of Chicago illustrate only five children.
