Botello studied painting in Bordeaux at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts, and later in Madrid. After the Spanish Civil War, he moved with his family to the Dominican Republic and then Haiti, finally settling in Puerto Rico, where he opened an art gallery. In his early work, the artist was influenced by the French masters, and felt a kinship with Gauguin's fascination with the tropics.
