Lot 1124
Max Liebermann
German, 1847-1935
Judengasse im Amsterdam (The Jewish Quarter in Amsterdam)
Signed M. Liebermann (lr) and inscribed as titled on the mat
Charcoal on paper
10 x 7 7/8 inches (25.4 x 19.6 cm)

This vertical composition is very similar to two lost oil paintings of the subject; see Matthias Eberle, Max Liebermann, 1847-1935: Werkzeichnis der Gemalde und Olstudien. Vol. II, 1900-1935 (Munich: Hirmer Verlag, 1996), catalogue nos. 1907/5 and 1907/6.

This charcoal sketch probably dates from sometime between 1905 and 1909, when the artist painted many views of Amsterdam's historic Jewish Quarter from the vantage point of a rented room above the street.

Estimate: $8,000 - $12,000
