Attributed to Ralph Albert Blakelock
Indian Woman in a Wood - Evening
Remnants of a signature (lr)
Oil on canvas
8 x 6 inches
Provenance:
H. H. Bowtell, New Jersey, acquired from his mother circa 1900
Private collection, Red Bank, New Jersey, thence by descent to the present owner
In a letter from Mr. H. H. Bowtell to Mrs. Alfred Lichtenstein dated October 14, 1938 he states "I am sorry it is in such bad repair but it has been tucked away in a closet for thirty-five or forty years...When I was around ten years old, I remember visiting Mr. Blakelock's studio and seeing him many times on the street, he always looked shaby [sic], had a brown beard in those days and a very funny tan coat...I rather suppose my parents loaned Mr. Blakelock money or purchased these pictures (I had two other small ones but sold them some years ago) at a very small sum as the poor man was always 'broke.'"
