Louis XVI Gilt-Bronze Mounted Parquetry Secretaire a Abattant
J. Dautriche, late 18th century
The molded edge breche d'Alep rectangular marble top above a frieze drawer with a guilloche-form mount flanked by ram's head leafage carved corner mounts and fluted sides, the central fall front writing lid opening to reveal a fitted interior, over two panel doors and two curved short drawers with a central lion mask, raised on rectangular feet, partial signature J. Dautriche. Height 54 inches (1.37 m), width 47 inches (1.19 m), depth 17 inches (43 cm).
Jacques van Oosternik called Dautriche, maitre 1765.
Dautriche was born in the Netherlands, but came to Paris to work in the Faubourg Saint-Antoine using a stamp with a French name. He acquired a reputation for his work in marquetry and parquetry and is mostly known for large case pieces, such as commodes and secretaires.
