Dominie Sampson is a character in Sir Walter Scott's second novel, Guy Mannering or the Astrologer, published anonymously in London in 1815. The schoolmaster in a small town in southern Scotland, Sampson ("dominie" is lowland Scots dialect for "schoolmaster"), is an unforgettable character, tall, gaunt and awkward in speech and manner, but a kindly and modest scholar.

Frame rubbing. Each is relined. Scattered cracquelure.

Each with scattered areas of inpainting throughout, slight masking varnish makes detection of older restoration difficult.
