Chief Lau-Hau
Signed G. Hudson (ll)
Oil on canvas
8 1/8 x 6 1/4 inches

The original title of this work has been identified as Captain Bill or Lau-hau. The subject was a leader of the Pomo Indian community of Yokayo, located near the present day town of Ukiah, California. Painted in 1899, this is the second of two small portraits of Captain Bill painted that year. The Grace Hudson Museum in Ukiah owns the first of these, Old Captain Bill, depicting the subject in nearly the same attire as here. That version is number 137 in the 684 numbered oil portraits that Hudson created to be sold through galleries. The present example is number 140 in this sequence, which the artist routinely signed and considered her professional work. According to the artist's painting diary, Captain Bill was first acquired by Mrs. S. S. Spaulding of Buffalo, New York.

We are most grateful to Marvin A. Schenck, curator of the Grace Hudson Museum, for his assistance in documenting this work.
