Little is known about the life of Hendrik Jacobsz Dubbels (1621-1707), who was active as a marine and winter landscape painter in Amsterdam from around 1645 on. His marine works are notable for their great variety, including views of beaches, inland estuaries, harbors, shipwrecks, and the open sea both in calm and in storm. His depictions of storms at sea feature brooding, pewter-colored clouds that show a clear connection to the work of Ludolf Bakhuizen, who is thought to have been his student.
