The present work is thematically and chronologically related to another painting by the artist, Catching the Thanksgiving Turkey, 1943 (Collection The Metropolitan Museum of Art). Indeed, the subject of capturing the bird in preparation for the Thanksgiving feast was a subject that Grandma Moses addressed on a number of occasions. When asked to comment about forty of her favorite works for her first monograph, Grandma Moses: American Primitive, she wrote:
"Why do we think we must have turkey for thankgiven.
Just becaus our Forefathers did, they had it becaus turkeys
were plentyfull, and they did not have other kinds of meat,
now we have abundance of other kinds of luxuries,
Poor Turkey, He has but one life to give to his country,"
[Otto Kallir, Grandma Moses: American Primitive, N.Y.: Dryden Press, 1946]
