This undated watercolor depicts the twin lighthouses on Thacher Island, off Cape Ann, Massachusetts. Constructed in 1771, the tall, slender structures were the first to mark a dangerous spot rather than a harbor entrance, and the last to be built under British rule. Rather than a single unit, twin lighthouses were designed in order to distinguish them from other lights on the coast; soon after construction, they earned the nickname "Ann's Eyes."

We thank Bricher scholar Jeffrey Brown for his assistance in identifying the location of this work.
