Jacques d'Albon de Saint André was a favorite of Henry II of France, who appointed him Marshal of France, Governor of Lyonnais, and Ambassador to England. He fought with great distinction in the Habsburg-Valois War, in which Henry tried to wrest territories in Italy and eastern France from the Emperor Charles V. After Charles's abdication in 1556, the war was continued by Charles's son, Philip II of Spain, who defeated the French at the Battle St. Quentin in 1557. Taken prisoner at St. Quentin, Jacques d'Albon was released the following year and in 1559 took part in negotiating the peace of Cateau-Cambrésis, which resolved the territorial disputes of the two kingdoms. He was killed in 1562 in the Battle of Dreux, an early engagement in the French Wars of Religion.
