William D. Pawley, Belvoir Farms, The Plains, Virginia; thence by descent to the present owner
William D. Pawley was the former U.S. Ambassador to Peru, Brazil and was also based in Panama, Guatemala, Cuba and Nicaragua. Besides his diplomatic duties, Pawley was also an avid hunter.
William Harnden Foster was an avid sportsman and a great admirer of the pointer. At a time when setters were championed as the dog for grouse hunting, Foster preferred the pointer for his grouse trialing and shooting wants. Through his association with the National Sportsman Magazine he was acquainted with many noted sportsmen and conservationists. Ever interested in preserving the integrity of the sport of grouse trialing and shooting and in sharpening the skills of the shooter and the dogs, Foster, along with several associates, developed "skeet", which was a method for practicing the shooting of a moving object. He compiled all his love and knowledge of the sport and in 1942 published the book New England Grouse Shooting, which has remained one of the great classics of the sport.
