Lot 493
Gold, Enamel and Yellow Sapphire Pendant-Brooch, Tiffany & Co., by Louis Comfort Tiffany
The cushion-shaped mount centering one cushion-shaped yellow sapphire* approximately 10.00 cts., framed by a geometric pattern of yellow and green enamel, accented by slender bands of gold, further bordered by two rows of apple green enamel leaves and lime green enamel diamond-shaped plaques, signed Tiffany & Co., circa 1900. With original signed box.
With AGL report no. CS 40918 stating that the yellow sapphire is natural color, no indication of heat treatment.
Louis Comfort Tiffany (1848-1933), son of the founder Charles Tiffany, began his career as a painter, living in Paris to study art. Although very talented, he decided his real gift was design and decoration. He founded Tiffany Studios, independent of Tiffany & Co. He became one of the most creative and dynamic leaders of the Art Nouveau period, well known for his glassware, vases and lamps, creating flowing organic designs derived from nature and experimenting with various techniques of enamel work. At the turn of the century, he developed an innovative approach to jewelry design, combining his sophisticated understanding of enamel work with the use of colorful gemstones, chosen for their inherent beauty instead of their intrinsic value. He was intrigued by the vivid colors of the gemstones playing off the colors of the enamels. He was also inspired by the designs and iridescent enamels of Middle Eastern and Roman glass. This brooch is an excellent example of his bold and innovative approach to jewelry design, which represented a dramatic departure from the delicate pearl and diamond jewelry being worn at the time.
