Whether painting mothers and children relaxing on sun-dappled lawns or delightful vignettes of seaside resorts, Potthast excelled in depicting America at play.
Adopting an Impressionist palette after travels to France, Potthast moved east from his native Cincinnati in 1895. By 1908 he had taken a studio in the newly constructed Gainsborough Building, a cooperative building at 222 Central Park South near Columbus Circle planned by a syndicate of artists and designed to take advantage of the northern light. From his vantage point overlooking the park he was ideally situated to watch the activity of people and families, which he recorded in plein-air sketches of the evolving scene below. In the Park is a verdant composition, portraying the park as the oasis of refreshment for city dwellers that it remains today.
Merrill J. Gross was an impassioned advocate and collector of Potthast's work. His collection was exhibited extensively in venues throughout the south and midwest.
