Born in Marseilles, Charles Camoin studied painting at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris, where he met Henri Matisse, a life-long friend. Together with Matisse and other like-minded artists, including Albert Marquet, Georges Rouault, Andre Derain and Maurice de Vlaminck, Camoin was one of the original group known as the Fauves ("wild beasts") so-called for their slashing brushwork and highly expressive use of color.

In the 1920s Camoin's palette moderated, but his brushwork was always rapid and spontaneous in feeling. Floral still lifes, such as Vase d'Anemones, were a favorite subject throughout his life.
