In the early 1920s, Konrad Cramer and his wife, Florence Ballin Cramer, settled in Woodstock, New York, where both became active members of the artists' community. Saugerties, along the Hudson River, is roughly ten miles east of Woodstock. The present work is the preparatory study for Tug Boat (Saugerties Boat), lot 194 in this sale.
