The mid and late nineteenth century in England saw an unprecedented flourishing of dog and animal art. This in large part stemmed from Queen Victoria's love of dogs that created a mania for pet portraiture and sentimental scenes of canine life. Walter Brookes obviously was a part of this trend, which would go into decline by the early years of the twentieth century, never again to achieve the popularity and technical proficiency of its heyday.
