There is a 1-inch-long slit in the paper immediately to the right of John the Baptist's head. This slit arrises from a horizontal crease in the paper that extends completely across the sheet, where the paper was once folded. There are small stains and foxing scattereded throughout, and an area of abbrasion to the right of John the Baptist's leg near the right margin of the sheet. The sheet is not hinged. On the back are unfinished sketches of heads and other forms in black chalk. There is staining a foxing throughout, and a tape of laid paper glued to the back running around the edge and varying in width from 1 to 2 inches. Also some patches remaining of another sheet of paper once glued to the back.
