. [London: John Day, 1571]. First edition, B1r with the "Interea" catchword, G4r with"quidem." Full red morocco gilt by Riviere, all edges gilt, marbled endpapers. 5 1/2 x 3 3/8 inches (14 x 8.5 cm); [2], 122, [4] pp., A-Q^(4). Binding with light joint wear, internally a fresh copy with full margins, the title with the contemporary ownership notation of Jo. Battely; apparently the Sunderland copy, later in the library of W. Sterling Maxwell, with his notes at the rear in pencil.
A relatively uncommon work, pp. 1-30 are by George Buchanan. Pp. 31-100 are attributed to Thomas Wilson, as is the translation of Literæ Reginæ Scot. ad comitem Bothuelium scriptæ, pp. 101-121. This is the first printing of the infamous "casket letters" that were used in evidence against Mary, Queen of Scots, in accusing her of collusion in the murder of her husband, Lord Darnley.
