[ANTI-SEMITISM] BAER [BAUER], ELVIRA. Trau keinem Fuchs auf gruner Heid und keinem Jud bei seinem Eid.
. Nuremberg: Stuermer Verlag, [1936]. First edition. Original pictorial boards, tan linen spine. 7 5/8 x 9 1/2 inches (19.5 x 24 cm); 44 pp., with 21 chromolithographic illustrations and calligraphic text in colors. An unusually fresh, bright copy, with a fascinating mimeographed letter laid in, from the Jewish Central Information Office, Amsterdam, dated December 22, 1936.
The literal translation of the title is Don't Trust a Fox in a Green Meadow, Nor a Jew at His Word. This is one of the most repugnant of several books directed towards young children in pre-War Germany, all designed to foster racial hatred. The enclosed note mentions that the book was issued at Christmas, and "...in such a hateful way, even small children are being trained to hate Jews." It is quite rare; we find only three copies at auction in the past twenty-five years. Baer was an 18-year-old art student, and the book proved popular, running to several printings. The publisher also issued the notorious newspaper Der Stuermer..
