. London: 2 January 1786. 1 page letter, possibly dictated or a copy of a letter, headed "To Mr. [James O.] Cromwell" and possibly in his hand. The letter addressed to Freeborn Garretson at Halifax, Nova Scotia, where the American born Methodist preacher had been assigned to the loyalist community there. 9 7/8 x 8 1/2 inches (25.5 x 21 cm). Folds, stains, chips to right margin affecting some words, sold as is.
This note offers Garrettson advice for preaching from Wesley himself and includes several of his oft-quoted phrases: "Health you shall have if health be best. First never scream ... 2 Never preach too long 3) Drink ... lemonade ... The soul and body make a man; The spirit and discipline made a Christian."
