Partially printed document accomplished in manuscript signed at left by Hancock and counter-signed by John Avery. 12 7/8 x 8 1/2 inches (33 x 22 cm); framed with a portrait. Retains paper seal, a few neat repairs to verso, some soiling to margins but clean and attractive overall with a large signature.
This document Captain Benjamin Lovett of Beverly, Essex County, Massachusetts takes an oath that the Ship Fox, captained by Israel Johnson, is "a prize and legally condemned in a maritime court." This document likely refers to the HMS Fox, which was captured by the American Navy Hancock and Boston in June 1777. A rare naval document from the Revolution.
