, dated Havana January 16 (19)59, 11a.m., addressed to Pastorita Nunez. 6 5/8 x 5 inches (17 x 12.5 cm); 8 lines on ruled paper plus address, greeting, felicitations etc., signed "Fidel Castro Ruz." Somewhat toned and browned, but an extraordinary letter.
Autograph letters by Fidel Castro are of considerable rarity. The recipient, Pastorta Nunez, was one of the most loyal combatants of the Cuban revolution, and this letter was written on the day Castro triumphantly marched through the streets of Havana celebrating the victory of the Cuban Revolution, thus this an exceptionally evocative example. In it he writes (in translation): "To Pastorita Nunez,
Dear Pastorita:
On the occasion of your birthday, I dedicate to you this warm note in just recognition of your loyalty in all tests during our most difficult stage of insurrection and to which you contributed your courageous support as a valorous comrade to our definitive victory, like a great bulwark and banner to consolidate it in this difficult stage.
Congratulations
With revolutionary affection
Fidel Castro
Pastorita Nunez was a guerilla of the Movement of July 26th, where she obtained the grade of 1st Lieutenant of the Rebel Forces, and was founder of the Civic Front of Mujeres Martianos, a group created to fight the dictatorship of Batista.
