Among the most influential of chess books of the period, the author was an Italian player (Gioachino Greco, known as Il Calabrese). He is numbered among the earliest professional masters of the game, and was almost certainly the greatest (and certainly the most influential) player of the period. He visited France in 1621 and competed against Arnaud de Corbeville, Chaumont, and other eminent players, beating them all.
Divided into two sections, this first part of this work gives 39 problems, and the second demonstrates the use of a variety of gambits and other techniques in 55 problems. These games (against anonymous, and possibly hypothetical opponents), offered many technical advances, including a variety of traps and checkmating patterns.
