... London: T. Osborne [etc.], 1757. First edition. Period green morocco, the boards with multiple rolls, the spine with a diapered design, all edges marbled. 15 3/4 x 9 3/4 (42.5 x 25 cm); [2-title], iv, ii, 714 pp., with frontispiece and 60 plates in contemporary (presumably publishers) coloring. Boards worn and detached, the spine a bit chipped (the binding likely restorable to something of its original elegance), a few minor stains to the upper margin of a few textual leaves at the end, but internally generally an unusually clean copy.
This copy has the dedicatory leaf to the Earl of Bute present, important because it names the likely author, Sir John Hill (this attribution is accepted by ESTC); the book is also sometimes attributed to Thomas Hale. The work was issued in sixty parts from 28 August 1756 to 8 November 1757. The plates have great charm. Henrey 776; Nissen 880; ESTC T32413.
