. London: J. Almon, 1769. First edition, with inscription (see note). Later half-morocco (defective). 7 1/4 x 4 1/2 inches (19 x 12 cm); [2], 207, [1], lv, [1] pp., this copy not quite matching the variants listed on ESTC (the page numbers are corrected, there is no half-title or errata leaf, the second line of imprint begins with "in"). The cover and rear board detached separating the first and last leaves from text block, contemporary presentation to first leaf, the title stamped and with ink notations, a manuscript note to p. 67 attributes this portion of the work to George Grenville, last leaf torn, bookplate of George Bancroft to rear pastedown.
Evans has attributed this work to Knox, Undersecretary of State for American Affairs and official agent to Georgia and East Florida in the 1760s. A defender of the Stamp Act, Knox is described as maintaining "a consistent line articulating a theory of imperial power based upon an evangelically-tinged system of paternal power and filial obligation." Evans also attributes the work to Thomas Whately M.P., whose ink presentation inscription appears on the first text leaf. This volume also with the bookplate of the American historian, statesman and Secretary of the Navy George Bancroft who discusses this work in his History of the United States. Howes K226; Sabin 38180; See Evans 11305 for the Boston edition.
