. Denham: 19 February 1940. 1 1/4 page typed letters signed "Robert Donat" on two pages of his personal stationery. 9 x 7 inches (23 x 18 cm). The first leaf with some spotting and offsetting.
Long beloved for his role, here Robert Donat responds directly to an inquiry about his character in the 1939 film: "'Chips' seems to be a universal character, because he inspires affection wherever he is shown ... I built 'Chips' up in my imagination ..." Donat was awarded the 1939 Best Actor Oscar for his role as Mr. Chips, beating Clark Gable in Gone With the Wind and James Stewart in Mr. Smith Goes to Washington in one of the most celebrated film seasons in history.
