. Washington: (privately printed), 1910. First edition, signed by Adams in his characteristic rather spidery hand at the foot of the introductory letter, p. vi. Original dull green cloth, green coated endpapers. 7 x 4 1/2 inches (18 x 11.5 cm); vi, 214, [2] pp. Very light wear, spine lettering a little dulled, but a fresh copy overall.
This is a rather scarce work by the author of Mont Saint Michel and Chartres and his classic posthumously published autobiography The Education of Henry Adams The last copy at auction was in the Forbes sale at Christie's in May 2006. BAL 34.
