. Litchfield: Collier & Adam, 1789. First edition, the front blank signed "Daniel Crom. Verplanck 1789." Contemporary calf with red lettering label, cloth slipcase. 7 7/8 x 5 1/4 inches; [5], 456, table, list of subscribers. Title verso stamped, the covers and title detached, the spine and corners with small losses, internally some spotting but a clean copy.
This is first substantial collection of judicial reports in the United States. Daniel Crommelin Verplanck was a United States Representative from New York. As a boy in 1771, he was the subject of a fine portrait by John Singleton Copley in which he holds a squirrel on a chain, one of Copley's most admired New York works. Evans 21914.
