Original vellum over boards signed by Sangorski and Sutcliffe on the turn-in, front cover pictorially stamped in gilt with a peacock design hand-heightened in rose and green, lower cover elaborately stamped in gilt, spine decoratively stamped in gilt with dark green morocco lettering label, with gilt board edges and turn-ins, red silk liners and endleaves, top edge gilt, others uncut, the fore-edge with two elaborate gold plated metal clasps, each set with three amethysts, the whole housed in a felt-lined cloth case, possibly original. 3 3/8 x 9 7/8 inches (34 x 25 cm); [2, blank], [2, limitation, verso blank], [2, title, verso blank], [10, preface], 36, 16, [14, notes], [7, list of illustrations], [1, colophon], pp. Twelve color plates, including illuminated title, four full-page and seven smaller illustrations. Merest hint of soiling to the fore-edge of the upper cover, but in all a very fresh copy.
The rare deluxe edition of this extraordinarily handsome and elaborate presentation of one of Sangorski and Sutcliffe's finest illuminated books.
