... London: William Pickering, 1853. Full dark brown crushed levant gilt by Howell of Liverpool, with a well-painted later fore-edge painting of the Last Supper concealed under the gilt. 7 x 4 5/8 inches (18 x 11.5 cm); unpaginated, with superb wood-engravings by Mary Byfield, with her brother John associated with the Chiswick Press under Charles Whittingham, the printers of this book. A sound, attractively bound copy, with a fore-edge of about 1950.
One of Pickering's masterpieces, this little book was referred to by Ruari Maclean as "a triumph of printing as well as of illustration and typography." Keynes p. 86.
