[MATHEMATICS] MANDEY, VENTERUS. Mellificium mensionis: or, the marrow of measuring. Wherein a new and ready way is shewn how to...
... London: Tho[mas] Tebb, 1717. Stated third edition, though possibly actually fourth. Contemporary panelled calf, neatly respined, all edges sprinkled. 7 1/4 x 4 1/2 inches (18 x 11.5 cm); portrait, [xxiv], 487, [3] pp., the last three pages being ads, with 12 folding copper plates. A sound copy, spine very neatly replaced, tiny spot of worming on the lower margin of the first two leaves, but in all a fresh copy. Early name of Thomas Yarborough, bookplate of Sir Humphrey de Trafford.
An extremely interesting work of pure and applied mathematics, with a section (the Rosetum geometricum) translated from the Latin of Thomas Hobbes by Mandey. The first edition was 1682, and the present and all earlier editions are institutionally uncommon, and the book is rare in commerce. Mandey was co-author with Thomas Moxon (the author in 1683 of the first printer's manual in English) of another work on mathematics, Mechanick Powers: or, the Mistery of Nature and Art Unvail's, 1696.
