Twelve volumes of facsimiles and twelve volumes of text, all bound in publisher's brown leather. 17 1/4 x 23 1/2 inches (44 x 60 cm); 1,286 sheets of facsimile, text volumes various paginations. An immaculate set, the portfolios housed in the original card slipcases and polystyrene shipping containers.
Assembled by the 16th century Italian sculptor and collector Pompeo Leoni, Codex Atlanticus is comprised of 1,286 items, and represents the largest collection of Leonardo's papers ever assembled. Included are spectacular drawings of technological innovations, of weapons and fortifications, of hydraulic devices, vessels and flying machines. Every aspect of Leonardo's genius is present, showing his abiding interest in the mechanical sciences and mathematics, in astronomy, physical geography, botany, chemistry and anatomy. It also includes studies for paintings such as the Adoration of the Magi, Leda and the Battle of Anghiari. Each volume of the twelve volume facsimile is accompanied by an additional volume with the critical and diplomatic transcription edited by Augusto Marinoni. Also included are the two later volumes cataloguing the work by Carlo Pedretti, the great Leonardo scholar (the first volume inscribed by Pedretti).
