[CARICATURE] GILLRAY, JAMES. The Works of James Gillray from the original plates... London: Henry G. Bohn, [circa 1849...
... London: Henry G. Bohn, [circa 1849]. Three-quarters leather, marbled sides (but rebacked in cloth retaining original spine label), all edges gilt. 24 3/4 x 19 1/4 inches; engraved portrait frontispiece, title leaf, 586 engravings on 152 ff. (the engravings are numbered throughout to 582, but there are five bis impressions, though no plate 238, which was omitted by the publisher). Binding worn, rebacked as noted, a small pale marginal stain affecting a portion of the work, some offsetting as usual, in general a sound clean copy. This copy does not include the rare suppressed plates.
Gillray's caricatures encapsulate the period 1782-1815, a large span of the reign of George III (who famously said of Gillray's work, of which he was a frequent subject, "I don't understand these caricatures").
