. Neufchatel and Paris: Guillot, 1786. First edition, first state. Four volumes in two, full red morocco by Kaufmann, covers with three filets, spines simply gilt, all edges gilt. 6 1/2 x 3 3/4 inches (15.5 x 10 cm); 272; 312; 312; 324 pp., with 34 engraved plates by Giraud l'âiné after Binet. Light wear to bindings, some minor toning and spotting, generally a clean set. With the bookplate of Digby H. R. Wingfield.
Each of the engravings corresponds to one of the tales in the book. The plates were drawn by Binet after suggestions by Restif, and it is claimed that many are authentic portraits of contemporary figures, including Grimod de la Reynière. The section on authors discusses Voltaire, Buffon, Racine, Molière and others, including Shakespeare. Rives Childs XXXI; Cohen-de Ricci pp. 878-9.
