TASSONI, ALESSANDRO. La Secchia rapita. Poema Eroicomico.

Two volumes bound in one, early 19th century polished calf by the Veuve Pouillet (a woman binder of whom we do not find much record--her name is stamped on the front dentelle), spine gilt, gilt dentelles, all edges gilt. 8 3/4 x 5 3/8 inches (22 x 14 cm); [2], cviii, 128 pp.; 239, [1] pp., with 2 engraved titles, dedication leaf, and 12 plates after Gravelot, with headpieces, vignettes etc. by other hands, portrait of the author at the head of p. i. (i.e. collating as Gordon Ray's copy). Light wear to binding, occasional toning; Together with TASSO, TORQUATO. La Gerusalemme Liberata. Paris: Bossange, Masson and Besson, 1792. Two volumes, French red morocco gilt of the period, flat spines, all edges gilt. 8 1/8 x 4 3/4 inches (20.5 x 12 cm); [2], viii, 326 pp.; [2], 333, [1], 2 pp. ads., with engraved titles, frontispieces, plates and vignettes after Gravelot. Spines dulled, light wear, occasional toning within, still an attractive set, modern bookplates (John Penn Brock, Robert Wayne and Brian Douglas Stillwell plates).
The second work is a reissue of the sheets of the 1785 Barrois edition, and is very much modelled on the 1766 Tassone.
