. Ex Regio typographeo [i.e. Giovanni Battista Bodoni]: Parma, 1780. Original (likely publisher's) salmon-pink boards, spine simply gilt tooled, leather spine label, all edges boldly stippled. 8 1/8 x 5 1/4 inches (20.5 x 14 cm); xvi, 112 pp. Light spine wear, discreet volume number mounted to head of spine, some light rubbing but a very attractive copy in original state. With the printed bookplate, roughly coeval with the book, of Giovanni Antonio de Somalea, [of Milan, see Gelli Ex Libris Italiani p. 107].
This is a pioneering bibliographical study of Ferrarese Hebrew imprints, from the time of the Soncinos to the end of the sixteenth century. De Rossi, Professor of Oriental languages at the University of Parma, was a leading figure in Hebraic studies, and Bodoni produced most of his major works. This work precedes his two great bibliographic disquisitions, the Annales Hebaeo-Typographici of 1795-99, and is among the earliest serious considerations of the bibliography of early Hebrew books. Brooks 157.
