by the firm of George P. Hall [1832-1900], 157 Fulton Street, New York, showing the construction of Harlem River Drive, 1894-1898. Each image 10 1/4 x 13 5/8 inches (26 x 35 cm) on gray card mount, most with the photographer's name and address at lower left, subjects and dates identified in pencil below the image, apparently initialled W.P.H. [i.e. presumably Hall]. Some minor defects to mounts, images in good condition.
These extraordinary images of the construction of one of the major highways of New York include several images looking south from the [George] Washington bridge (the tower at the Cloisters evident on the bluffs above). Many details of the construction of the roadbed, including the trestles made of interwoven trees, are evident. Later views (1898) show the almost completed roadbed.
