Lot Details

Lot 668
BENTLEY, WILSON A. (1865-1931) Snowflake composite 1926.
1926. Image assembled from glass plate negatives, 7 1/4 x 9 1/4 inches (185 x 235 mm), signed, dated and titled in white ink by Bentley on the lower border recto Very minor soiling, mostly marginal, lower left.
An unusual composite image by this remarkable vernacular photographer. Bentley was a Vermont farmer, who in 1885 became the first person to photograph a single snow crystal. He recorded about 5,000 in all, discovering in the process that no two are alike, possibly the first time that this observation had been made. To create the images, he used a microscope attached to a bellows camera.
