Dr. Linda Ferber has suggested that the subject of the watercolor is the Newport coast based on the similarity of this work in subject to a watercolor of 1871 titled Sunrise at Newport, R.I., once in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art [80.1.56] and now known through a photograph.
