Literature:
Howard E. Wooden, Edward Laning: American Realist, 1906-1981, The Wichita Art Museum, Sep. 11-Oct 17, 1982, pp 14-15. The related large oils are reproduced as figs. 31, 32, 33, 34, and 35.

The present works appear to be preparatory studies for five large oil studies for an intended sequence of murals titled The Passion of Carrie Nation. "Although finished murals were never undertaken, the studies themselves relate closely in style to easel paintings executed during the late 1950s and are actually the only mural studies which stylistically deviate from the manner which he had adopted in the mid 1930s.. Laning had read and studied The Use and Need of the Life of Carrie A. Nation, Written by Herself, published in 1905, and saw Carrie Nation as a determined person, strong in character and dedicated to the values in which she believed." [Howard E. Wooden, Edward Laning: American Realist, 1906-1981, The Wichita Art Museum, Sep. 11-Oct 17, 1982, pp 14-15]

The titles for the corresponding large oil studies to which the present works relate are indicated in parentheses in the cataloguing for the individual works.
