Lot Details

Lot 112
American School
19th Century
Lady Archibald Campbell as Orlando
Oil on canvas
55 1/4 x 19 inches
Literature:
Nathaniel Pousette-Dart, James McNeill Whistler, New York, NY, 1924, p. 47, illus.
A. McLaren Young, James McNeill Whistler, London, 1960

This work was attributed to Whistler in the Pousette-Dart publication as Lady Archibald Campbell as Orlando but this attribution and identification was doubted by Professor McLaren Young in his catalogue. In a letter by Margaret F. MacDonald she agrees with professor Young's assessment of the attribution, though she leaves open the possibility that the sitter could be Lady Archibald Campbell.
