to Arthur C. Coan, Nyack, New York
to Mrs. C. Arthur Coan, Nyack, New York
to Kitty Gellhorn, Englewood, New Jersey and New York City, and by descent.
The present painting was a gift from the artist to his close friend and collaborator, Arthur C. Coan. Samuel Colman's obituary in The New York Times of March 30, 1920, tells us that a book co-authored by Colman and Coan entitled "Proportional Form," was published only five days before Colman's passing. A 1912 treatise by Colman on the mathematical underpinnings of pattern in nature is still in use today. Entitled "Nature's Harmonic Unity," it was edited by Coan, who also provided the mathematical expertise.
