Set of Eleven George III Irish Sterling Silver Chargers
Robert Calderwood, Dublin, 1760s
Each shaped circular with gadroon border, the cavetto engraved with heraldic arms and crest; Together with a George III Sterling Silver Charger. Diameter 9 1/4 inches (23.5 cm), total approximately 194 ounces.
The arms are those of Sir Ralph Gore, 6th Baronet, first and last Earl of Ross of Manor Gore, County Donegal and his first wife Katherine Connolly of Castletown. Gore was a distinguished officer during the War of Austrian Succession who was wounded at the Battle of Fontenoy in 1745. He later led a battalion in the Battle of Lafeldt during the French invasion of the Low Countries in 1747.
Gore represented County Donegal in Parliament after his military career, and was appointed Commander-in-Chief in Ireland in 1788.
The crest is that of Sir Thomas Roe, Lord Roe of Derby. Roe had a long business and political career and was knighted in 1894.
