American Sterling Silver Mounted Oak Loving Cup
Maker's mark B&F, late 19th/ early 20th century
Of barrel-form with shaped silver mounts and applied shield engraved "AGV" for Alfred Gwynne Vanderbilt, with three loop handles. Height 8 inches.
Alfred Gwynne Vanderbilt (1877-1915) was the third son of Cornelius Vanderbilt who became head of the family on his father's unexpected death in 1899. Vanderbilt continued to build the family's railroad empire. He was tragically lost in the sinking of the RMS Lusitania when it was torpedoed off the coast of Ireland in 1915 by German U-boats, an act that brought America into the First World War.
