Peter Müller Munk Sterling Silver Punch Bowl
Circa 1940
Of circular form, with applied strapwork, the center of the bowl with a laurel wreath on disk foot. Diameter 11 1/4 inches, approximately 54 ounces.
Peter Müller Munk (1904-1967) was a German born silversmith who emigrated to the United States in 1926 and worked briefly with Tiffany & Co. before opening this own firm in New York and then moving to Pittsburgh to accept a position at the Carnegie Institute of Technology in 1935. His silver gives the fresh vision of an industrial designer to traditional forms, as seen with this bowl whose classic shape incorporates stylized strapwork as its only decoration. Müller Munk's work was included in design exhibitions of the 1930s and the Newark Museum purchased a bowl in 1929 for the collection.
