WAWRA VON FERNSEE, HEINRICH Botanische ergebnisse der reise seiner majestat des Kaisers von Mexico Maximilian I. nach Brasilien (1859-60).
Vienna: Carl Gerold's Son, 1866. First edition. 19th-century buff boards, likely publisher's, the upper cover with a mounted label (or ?parts wrapper cover) with the publication information, housed in a modern clamshell case. 19 1/8 x 13 3/4 inches (49 x 35 cm); half-title, title, xvi, 224, [4] pp., with 104 lithographed plates after Josef Seboth, 32 partially printed in color. Corners of binding bumped, joints rubbed but sound, internally some scattered foxing, but overall a clean copy.
First edition of this important work on the flora of Brazil, which described many hitherto unrecorded species. Wawra, a ship's surgeon, accompanied Maximilian I to Brazil in 1859-60; the plants were collected for the expedition by the botanist and royal gardener Franz Maly. Maximilian I was subsequently self-appointed as Emperor of Mexico (at the invitation of Napoleon III) between 1864 and 1866, but was deposed and executed by the forces of the Republic of Mexico.
